This is where a foam cannon comes in…

It makes the car washing process a lot faster and easier and that’s not even the best part…

The best part is, you can Get a swirl and scratch-free shine at home with ease using Foam guns/Foam cannons and that too having a lot of fun!

Foam cannon vs. foam gun:

IF you are a newbie, you might not know the difference between these two.

So, let me lay it out for you; both the accessories can be used for the car washing. The main difference, however, is the way they are used. Furthermore, a foam cannon produces a better result than the foam gun.

A cannon requires a pressure washer. foam gun, on the other hand, can be used with a garden hose.

This means that a good cannon can produce more quantity of foam than the foam gun. Furthermore, the thickness of the foam is also better in the foam cannons leading to a better car wash overall.

A foam cannon does cost a few more bucks, but that extra money is well worth it if you want to achieve best possible results!

Our picks for the best foam guns and cannons:

Okay, now that you are aware of the perks of having a foam gun/ foam cannon, let’s talk about the best options available in the market for you.

  1. Adam’s Red Foam Cannon- the premium cannon!

Adam is a reliable name in the car washing related equipment business, and as expected, this piece of equipment lives up to its name.

Rightly after unboxing the cannon, I was impressed by the materials and the finishing. The cannon comes with a quality brass ¼ connector and a huge, thick plastic bottle that holds 33.81 ounces of liquid.  Sadly though, it can only be connected to the pressure washer. So, the standard garden hose won’t work, unfortunately.

On a positive note, this is probably one of the few cannons that work flawlessly with a pressure as low as 870 PSI and high as 3190 PSI without any trouble. The max flow is 20L/s, which is pretty standard in my testing.

Coming back to design, I found the grip to be very comfortable, easy to squeeze yet allowing you to feel the pressure of poIr washer. This allows me to wash cars for longer hours without any hassle. Further, all the components are durable and made of corrosion-free stainless steel, thus providing excellent durability.

Pros

Cons

Durable design and aesthetic

Price is a bit steep

Handles both low and high pressure efficiently

High adjustability

  1. SudMagic Foam Cannon

This professional foam lands from SudMagic, and undoubtedly, is an exceptional foam lance to power wash your car before waxing.

This cannon has a ¼” male quick connector that can handle pressure as high as 3200 PSI and/or 5.3 GPM. This means that in addition to washing and detailing cars, trucks, vans, SUVs, motorhomes, and ATVs, the SudMagic foam cannon can also be used for cleaning siding on houses or other chores around the yard.

Patented Brass Threaded Bottle

Most of the foam cannons have plastic threaded bottles that screw into brass. A metal to plastic connection causes the threads of the bottle to strip out quickly, rending the foam cannon useless. To address this issue, SudMagic has made a brass threaded bottle that will not strip.

Surprisingly missing from many of the bottles, the patented brass threaded bottle has measuring marks on the side of the bottle for making perfect concentration mix.

Similar to MATCC and other high brands, the SudMagic foam cannon is also adjustable. It lets you adjust the vertical height of spray by rotating the nozzle. Quite similarly, the thickness of the foam spray can also be adjusted up to your likings. A knob on top of the cannon lets you do that by changing the water-to-soap ratio.

One thing that is missing from some of the guns is the ability to turn the soap all the way off. Fortunately, in our testing, when the soap-to-water mixing valve was turned all the way to the + side, SudMagic foam cannon picked no soap at all, and at the water from the nozzle came clear.

Pros

Cons

Brass threaded bottle

Does not work properly on low pressure

Easy to assemble

Produces a great amount of foam

Final thoughts:

Although the gun struggled to work properly on low-pressure (below 1000PSI), the very-Ill needed brass threaded bottle seals the deal for me. Also, the amount of foam produced was overwhelming!

  1. MATCC Foam Wash Gun

This MATCC foam wash gun is another professional type foam lance that comes with variable, an adjustable spray nozzle for accurate mixing and foam generation. This cannon has 1/4″ Quick Connector fitting and 33 oz. fluid tank.

Do note that this gun doesn’t work with a water hose, as this is to be used with a pressure washer.
HoIver, what I liked about it how easily it attaches to the pressure washer. What’s even better is that it can handle the pressure of 200 – 3000 PSI, meaning you can wash from your car to a house without a hitch.

The build of the gun is very good. The foam lance core is made of quality brass while the container is made out of thick white plastic. There are (2) adjustments that allow you to dial-in the sprayer for any situation: top dial is for foam dispensing amount and the nozzle adjusts the spray pattern (wide to narrow).

Pro tips:

– The knob lets you control the water-to-soap ratio. Not to be confused, the minus (-) sign means less water, more soap (so more foam is produced), and the (+) sign indicates otherwise.

– Make sure not to max out the knob to the (-) side. For max foam, turn the knob all the way to the (-), then twist it back a little.

Pros

Cons

Solid materials and build

Some users have reported leakage issues

Can easily handle high pressure

Final thoughts:

MATCC gun is flexible and versatile enough to work on all vehicles from large trucks and trailers to bikes and boats. I faced some leakage issues (though this could be due to high-pressure) but the overall experience with MATCC foam gun was great.

  1. Gilmour Cleaning Sprayer Foamaster II

8thth on our list is The Gilmour Foamaster II.

The Foamaster II cleaning sprayer by the renowned maker ‘Gilmour’ is the perfect all-around tool for cleaning, degreasing and disinfecting. Its even distribution of foam ensures the most controlled, scratch-free wash possible.

This professional foam wash gun connects to a standard garden hose WITHOUT the need for pressure washers or other expensive equipment. You don’t even need to mix water and cleaning solution beforehand, the custom mixing head blends the perfect ratio of car wash soap, running water, and ambient air to gently clean any vehicle with foaming suds.

Adjustable Foam Concentration

The problem with most foam guns is the imbalanced usage of soap and water. Is your car very dirty or not much dirty? A properly balanced mixture of soap and water is a must, that will not only do the job properly but will also save the soap and your money.

Fortunately, Gilmour Foamaster Foam Cannon offers a dial that lets you picks the perfect concentration. Simply, turn the dial to adjust the dilution ratio of the soapy foam sprayed from the nozzle.

The product offers five different dilution ratios:

Unfortunately, its not all gold and glitters and I have some complaints, specifically about the product design.

The major problem with the sprayer is that the nozzle has a tendency to fly off like a rocket, which can potentially chip off the paint. It is encased in a snap-on plastic molded grip that doesn’t actually grant full coverage.

Pros

Cons

Adjustable mixing ratio

Handle trigger is not grippy enough

Very durable

Spray nozzle keeps knocking off

Even distribution

Water pressure is underwhelming

Final thoughts:

The Gilmour Foamaster II offers tons of features, most notably – the concentration adjuster and the even distribution of the liquid, though it is quite hard to ignore the unreliable design/aesthetic resulting into the spray nozzle knocking off, creating scratches on the body.

  1. Installer Champ Foam Blaster

This foam blaster by Installer Champ is primarily sold to & used by professional detailers that let you blanket your vehicle in thick, creamy foam for professional level detailing at the convenience of your home. It can even remove dirt from cracks and corners on other surfaces if you choose to use it on something other than your vehicle.

It comes with a 100% brass-made 1/4″ Quick Connector (which is probably the most common attachment type for pressure washer sold in the USA). Luckily, it can also handle high water pressures (max pressure/bar: 3200PSI/220BAR) and a max flow of 20L/MIN.

Like most of the foam blasters, you can adjust the thickness of the foam according to your liking.
Quite similar to the MATCC foam machine gun, the Installer Champ foam gun also has a (pressure) dial knob on top with a (+/-) that lets you adjust the thickness of the spray foam. You can also adjust the vertical height of the spray foam by twisting the nozzle handle right or left.

Not to be confused, similar to the MATCC foam gun, the minus (-) sign indicates less water, more foam and the (+) indicates more water, less foam.

Overall, the quality of the gun is extremely top notch and I really have no complaints about the products. To make the deal sweeter, the brass connector and bottle come with 90 days, 100% “no questions asked” leak proof warranty.

Pros

Cons

Well build

High-pressure flow

Thick foam

Final thoughts:

Mostly used by professionals, the Installer Champ is a truly effective auto detailing choice for you. Good build, high-pressure flow handling, thick foam and no major complaints– it checks all the boxes.

  1. Fasmov pressure washer foam cannon

Fasmov cannon is another great option for you if you are on a tight budget.

The cleaning prowess of Fasmov are amazing and it can do much more than just car wash owing to the adjustable nozzle.

For cleaning a fragile surface, you can set the nozzle at a wide angle so that it can produce the foam gently. As for a car wash, or cleaning any hard surface, any angle will do. The foam produced is thick enough to stick around on any surface to ensure proper cleaning.

The packaging of this product was decent but what really impressed me was the build quality. It came with a ¼ inch quick connector made of high-quality brass and a bottle made of hard plastic. Thankfully, the bottle was translucent which allowed me to monitor the soap level easily.

The cannon worked flawlessly out of the box and all in all, I would say that it is a pretty decent foam cannon.

Pros

Cons

  • Adjustable nozzle
  • Not very long lasting
  • Can be used with heated water
  • You might need to tighten the fittings to avoid any leakage.
  • A very cheap price compared to others.
  • Easy to use

Final thoughts

The cannon offers great value for its price and I have no complaint whatsoever! Sure, it is not entirely perfect, but it gets the job done!

Before you make the pick…

Before you jump to the conclusion, here are some important factors you should consider when buying a cannon/gun:

  1. Flexibility: A good cannon is not restricted to cleaning your car only. It allows multi-surface cleaning, just in case you need to clean other surfaces. You should also look for a cannon that offers adjustable dial for adjusting the amount of soap-to-water ratio.

Another thing you need to look out for with foam cannons is that the connection to the pressure washer should be universal. You’ll need to make sure the one you buy comes with a quick connect that fits your pressure washer (most of them are ¼).

  2. Solid Construction: Most of the people have complained about the plastic threaded bottle. Cannons made of brass are known to be durable and can serve you for several years. You need a robust cannon to withstand potential impacts and drops in the outdoor environment. Make sure to do a proper inspection of the build quality of the cannon/item before you make the purchase.
  3. Performance: Before buying a cannon, you must be aware the performance ratings of your pressure washer as this will allow you to buy a cannon that will work best with your low, medium or high-powered pressure washer. You must make sure that your pressure washer isn’t overpowered. Most of the cannons I’ve tested handles 3000-3200 PSI pressure. Using an overpowered pressure washer (say over 3500 PSI) might cause the cannon to explode or at least damage.
  4. Affordability: Obviously, everything comes at a price, and there is a huge difference between the price tag of branded ‘renowned’ cannon and the less famous ones. The best (and expensive) cannons range from $70-$120, though you can also get a decent cannon for $30-35 from Amazon, they come with a few compromises. It all depends on what you need and how much you’re going to use it.
  5. Warranty: As most of the foam guns and cannons are made of plastic or brass, the chances of them being damaged or broken, if mishandled, are pretty high. For this reason, when buying a foam gun or foam cannon, I recommend sticking to brands that are likely to provide warranty support or replacement parts should something break. Also, if you’re in the US, I would recommend buying a US-made product (e.g Gilmour) as this guarantees better support.

Wrapping it up!

With all being said, it would be unfair to crown any ‘cannon’ as the best and in the end, it all comes down to your personal preferences! Use our guide and the important factors in mind to choose which cannon suits you the best.

If you’re really tight on cash but really want to try out a foam cannon then choose which are affordable to your pocket, though keep in mind that they are prone to damage and may break fairly easy. However, if you’re an auto enthusiast who enjoys washing their vehicles or a pro that does this for a living, it is worth it to spend a few more bucks on a higher quality lance like the Adam, MTM or ChemicalGuys.
